Mohamud Shawul Abdirahman

Mohamud Shawul Abdirahman is a Civil Engineer and Environmental & Social Safeguarding Specialist with over a decade of experience in implementing major civil engineering projects, construction engineering, infrastructure development, project management, sustainable concrete materials research, and the nexus between the environment, climate change and infrastructure.

He currently serves as an Environmental & Social Safeguarding Specialist with World Vision International, where he leads environmental and social impact assessments (ESIA), initial environmental examinations (IEE), the development of ESIA tools, the preparation of environmental monitoring plans and capacity-building on environmental and social safeguarding for staff and implementing partners. Mohamud has produced high-quality environmental reports and developed environmental and social safeguarding policies that have strengthened donor confidence in compliance with their environmental standards.

Previously, he served as a Project Engineer for the ILO’s JPLG project, working closely with the Southwest State Ministry of Public Works and local governments, including Baidoa Municipality. He contributed to the delivery of safe and secure public infrastructure and trained local government staff on quality control, monitoring and evaluation, public works, and public service delivery.

Mohamud has also worked with UNOPS, NIS Foundation, DT Global, JICA, UNIDO, the Southwest State Ministry of Public Works, the Federal Government of Somalia’s Ministry of Water & Energy, and various engineering consulting firms in different capacities. He led the design, planning, management, and implementation of both small- and large-scale infrastructure projects, including the construction of a 2.4 km cobblestone road in Baidoa. In addition, he has led public policy research, feasibility studies, policy analyses, and field operations to meet multilateral donor standards.

Mohamud is fluent in Somali and English and is a beginner in Japanese. He holds a BSc in Civil Engineering and an MSc in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Nagoya University in Japan. He brings a strong blend of technical expertise, social research, policy analysis, environmental and climate change acumen and agile project management approaches aimed at delivering sustainable solutions in fragile contexts such as Somalia and other developing countries.
