Mustafa Bananay is a seasoned Security Sector Analyst and Consultant with over 15 years of specialized experience in addressing complex security dynamics in Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa. His work has focused on terrorism, transnational organized crime, illicit arms trade, and violent extremism, with an emphasis on the operational landscapes of groups such as Al-Shabaab and Daesh.
He currently serves as a Security Sector Consultant with GIST Research, where he leads field-based contextual analysis, actor mapping, and threat monitoring in newly stabilized regions of Somalia. His analysis directly informs stabilization programming, SNA reform efforts, and federal-state political developments. Mustafa has produced critical studies on Al-Shabaab’s external operational networks and their zakat-based financial infrastructure, enabling predictive modeling of their income streams and expenditures.
Previously, he served as a Senior Analyst with DFID/Sahan Research, delivering high-impact research and strategic guidance on state-building, security sector reform, and counterterrorism policy. He played a key role in assessing violent extremist radicalization, illicit taxation systems, and the broader implications of non-compliance with UN sanctions.
Mustafa has advised the leadership of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) on counter-IED strategies and terrorist financing, and helped craft Somalia’s first national CIED Investigation and Exploitation strategy. His earlier roles with UN missions (UNSOM, UNMAS, UNHCR) and the ICRC reflect a deep operational understanding of field safety, humanitarian access, GIS mapping, and mine action.
Fluent in Somali and English, and equipped with a BSc in Criminal Justice, Mustafa brings a unique blend of technical acumen, policy insight, and local expertise essential for donor-funded initiatives aimed at sustainable peace, institutional reform, and regional security.
